This is the second important thing: "started and run initially by people who know what makes things tick"

The FIRST is:

"started and run initially by people who know the potential way way before others see it". It is this knowledge that drives them against all the odds.

The day we see these guys doing something for fuel...

For a complete contradiction of your hypothesis, look at Chevron (Standard Oil of California).

Chevron was started and run initially by accountants, lawyers, MBAs and 'managers' and was subsequently taken over by people who know what makes things tick.

When the the creator of the company left, the successor companies were finally free to innovate and create real value.

John D. Rockefeller, with no education beyond the age of 16, founded Standard Oil in 1870 as a vehicle to monopolize the oil industry. Although geeks worked for him in lower level positions, he himself had little interest in the actual details of the oil business. He occupied his time either buying competitors or running them out of business.

When the company was split up as an illegal monopoly in 1911, the CEO of the new Standard Oil Company of California was an attorney and he was succeeded by men with a background in Finance.

Only in recent times, after World War II, has Chevron been run by Chemical Engineers and other geeks.
