I agree with you there. I don't understand it either. But then again, the Irish Republican Army set off bombs to kill other Christians in Northern Ireland. Christian vs. Christian... Muslim vs. Muslim... is there a difference?

At first we thought it was a few Baath leftovers setting off bombs. Not now. It only makes sense (and then not much) if we view it as a civil war, Sunni against Shiite. The Sunnis were in power for decades and now they're essentially out. There exists a such a depth of hate between the two groups such that Sunnis are willing to kill Sunnis in the process of killing Shiites. I don't think even Bush Sr. anticipated that degree of hate between the two factions of Islam.

Americans are seen as allies of the Shiites (and Kurds) so we are also targets. If I read the reports correctly, the North (Kurdish) and South (Shiite) areas are relatively safe. It's the Sunni center thats the problem.
