When they evacuated the Keys for Rita, I read that they did have the wisdom to turn the highway all northbound. Florida is brighter than Texas??

Regarding Lib & Force. I'm not libertarian, although I'm far from authoritarian as well. I'm quite liberal on free speech & thought issues, while rather more controlling on property issues. I.e. more of a dem lib than a rep lib.

I do agree with you that independent of the issue at hand, humans respond better to a carrot than a stick. I've been arguing that with you and others wrt to the ME.

Of course I'm not expecting Chinapeople to become vegan anytime soon. They seem to be one of the few human cultures that (IMO) lacks ANY food taboos. As you have pointed out, there are consequences to cultural practices. Unfortunately the consequences of Congo bushmeat or Chinese poultry are not confined to the region of origin. Does that mean we should nuke them under the assumption that stupidity and guilt are close cousins?

Speak of the devil. The lumbering authorities have figured it out. Or maybe they noticed people just doing it and thought they should formalize the matter quite quickly. CNN now showing inbound lanes opened to outbound traffic.

<... freeways are jammed heading out of Rita's path. But freeway lanes heading towards Rita are empty. One would think the freeways would be turned into one way systems OUT. the jams are absurd. Authorities just don't seem to be able to figure things out. I'm surprised people don't just start using the other side of the freeway, going down the off-ramps to get on. >

Oh, hang on. That was one place. The rest is still jammed and little movement. Duh! Maybe the problem is further out and those roads need to be made one way out too. One would think evacuation plans would be well-practised over the last half century.
