I disagree with your contention that it is inane or inaccurate.

Guns can be used to kill people. They can also be used to save people (often without killing or even wounding any person). They can be used to hunt. They can be used for target shooting. Knives usually don't make good book ends either and they wouldn't be my first choice to stir stew.

Guns don't kill people, because it is a person who decides to use them to kill, just as with knives. The main difference with guns is that they act at a distance and so are more dangerous in most circumstances then knives.
