As are the other things I mentioned such as the United States being destroyed politically or physically without ever becoming totalitarian.

Political destruction would include balkanization to the point that there is no recognizable state you could call the US, or merger in to a larger political entity such as a world government.

Physical destruction would include things like a major asteroid or comet hit, a "super-volcano" eruption of sufficient severity, maybe a nuclear war, or possibly other things such as unexpected changes in solar radiation (or the expected changes that aren't expected for at least hundreds of millions of years), or a gamma ray blast anywhere close to Earth (even thousands of light years away)

Invasion and conquest of the US would mainly fall under "political destruction", even if it would probably require a lot of physical destruction. Its not likely to happen any time soon but it could easily happen eventually.
