I don't wonder at all that anything went wrong. It is clear saddam put in storage all sorts of tech needed to restart WMD whenever it was possible. And saddam engaged in activity to make outsiders believe he had WMD. Post 911 the only sure way to ride saddam of WMD or future WMD was elimination.

Eliminating WMD or future WMD ended the threat it would fall into the hands of terrorists. Eliminating saddam also restored the fact of the rule of law in international dealings. The primary legal basis for the war was to restore rule of law in international dealings. All one need do is read the joint resolution that authorized the war.
