The NYT can't afford to ignore Calame or to allow him to leave after his contract expires.

I don't think, as Nadine does, that we need a paper of record any longer.

I suspect that he started out fairly positive, and kept getting negative feedback from Keller and the editorial department. Now he is obviously pissed at their reaction

But firing your Public Editor after he yells at you in public would be so very...public. I think they'll rather grin and bear it, than subject themselves to the hooting that would follow dismissing their new public editor because they won't take his medicine. But TWT.

And still focused on trivia, while trying to make it a big deal. Looks more and more as if Calame had an agenda coming in.
