The official story doesn't seem to fit the evidence, but neither do any of the conspiracy theories. In the realm of pure speculation, I'd probably lean toward a third explanation. Perhaps something along the lines of a missile hitting the plane just prior to impact. Of course, if the tapes were made public, we wouldn't need to guess, we'd know. And, if the official story were true, there'd be no reason not to release the tapes.
