I agree with all of those objections to VATs that you raised.

I would also add that the hidden nature of multiple level VAT levies makes it a tax EASY to HIDE from the public --- a king that politicians LOVE to raise.

(Only thing easier to hide from public awareness is the 'inflation tax': a slow depreciation of a nation's currency, and associated 'bracket creep'. That seems to be the politician's FAVORITE tax... the VAT might be their second favorite.)
