No Where Else For the Sick To Go

From Jason:

Today I was in Algiers all day. With Hurricane Rita marching toward land it was very eerie to be in town. I was at Malik Rahim's house all day. He's the ex-Black Panther who is basically leading the relief effort in Algiers. The wind in NOLA was very gusty today and Malik said that it felt just like it did in the days before Katrina. No one was on the streets... the city is a ghost town.

Malik told me a story today about how in the first few days after the hurricane the city was so lawless that he had two guys sitting on his front porch with shot guns. Evidently, there are a lot of white militias in Algiers and they were shooting at any black on the streets and then just telling the cops that they were "looting". Apparently, this was an acceptable answer for the NOPD.

The kicker for today was that the human health services from the state tried to shut down the free clinic that Malik has set up in his community. They have helped over 1000 individuals there in a time when there was NO WHERE else for the sick to go. Now the state wants to shut them down and the only reasons they could give were red tape and bureaucracy. When we heard that this was going down at the clinic, Malik and I ran over there. Once the representatives saw Malik they immediately backed down. They left within 5 minutes of our arrival. We won the battle today, but not the war. The clinic that Malik opened is very embarrassing for the government. The fact that they can't get it together but a bunch of activists can is obviously unacceptable to them. I'm sure they will come back again and continue what they started today.

More to Come...
