I believe it IS their job to position our manufacturing, trade, services and technologies in such a way as to be competitive with the rest of the world and hopefully to lead it. I don't entirely disagree. Theoretically good government should be able to do that, but we are far from being able to expect government to do that. Government science (I will call it that) is in a primitive state. It will be a long time before we can implement a system where we will have intelligent government most of the time. Until then, we will have to deal with what we have. We will continue to try to improve the quality of people that goes into government and we will have to play it by ear as to exactly what government has to do and what the private sector has to do.But because we hit a boom period, spurned on by technology and industry, government officials did not peer down the road far enough to recognize that once the rest of the world catches up to our industry and technology, we will need an entirely new means for staying globally competitive. Most of these things are not planned. I don't think "Intelligent Design" had anything to do with it. They just happen due to circumstances. Just like the Internet. It just happens. To expect government officials to peer down to see anything is laughable. It happened here in the United States because conditions were better here than anywhere else. And, unless our own right wing screws things up, we will continue to dominate: 1. Because of our location. We are at the center of our universe. We are a continental power. We can better deal with Europe and Asia etter than they can with each other. 2. Because of our dominent language. India is a looming economic power becasue a lot of their people are educated in the english language. Anyone in China expecting to succeed have english as a second language. When European scientists/intellectuals get together in large informal settings they will speak to each other in english. 3. Because we own the digital world. We own the language and the Intellectual Properties of computer technology (Assembler, Basic, Browser, Cobol, DOS, Fortran, Google, Intel, Java, Micrsoft, Perle, Yahoo, etc). 4. Because of our openess. Because of our university systems (Universities of California, Harvard, Yale, MIT, Stanford, University of Illinois, University of Michigan, NYU, etc, etc). I agree with our right wing, I think, for the time being, we should have less government. Except our right wing wants the government to be strong in dealing with the "bad guys". They want to be able to go after and kill the "bad guys". They want to be able to shut down the "bad guys". It would be difficult to argue against that, except - it would be very difficult to get people to agree on defining "bad guys". Even if you could define "bad guys", it would still be difficult in getting rid of them. None of our right wing really care about how many "not bad guys" are hurt along the way. They just won't do the math on that. Okay, I kind of digressed. End of rant.
