IMO, The only drawback is if the old harddrive spins slower then the new it can slow down the system if it is daisy chained on the same cable.

You are so right about the simplicity. However, if one is not comfortable working inside the box this is a job which should be done by a pro. It is conceivable one could zap their old hard drive out with static.
