There were already murdered federal officials, killed by Koresh and company. The method was SOP in such a situation. If there had been no fire, it is likely no child would have been killed. The fire was stupid accidental. And one can make the case that attack at all in Waco was stupid. Some make the case today attacking Iraq was stupid. I personally believe Waco, the attack was stupid and Iraq the attack was quite rational. I don't get outraged at stupidity. Outrage is for those who knowingly attack anothers person for dishonest reasons.

But it does give rise to this rule-of-thumb: If anyone ever wants to effectively declare war on the government of the United States, a State, or locality's legal arms... it would behoove them to first make sure that they have lots of kids (hostages, or otherwise) to have available as shields. :( ...Maybe even some 'special koolaid' on hand as a last resort... if they really want to make a statement. Double :(
