It was all from the most current data available. Derived from the source listed. Yes it definitely establishes the fact that the bulk of the taxes are paid by filers with the highest reported income. Generally this is people with earned income, thus the least flexibility in how and when they report it. The highest 574 are probably people exercising stock options and or participating in IPOs as sellers. Some are obviously people cashing out of large stock positions for reasons as varied as diversification (Bil Gates), avoidance of appearance of conflict of interest (Dick Cheney), sour grapes (Michael Ovitz), etc.

The beast of burden are definitely the high income reporters, and not the middle class.
