$1bn an hour even for 6 hours a day isn't too bad. In a year, that would be significant revenue. Economic activity doesn't have to run 24 hours a day to be worthwhile.

It is not economic now on such a grand scale. That's why it's not worth doing now.

BP has been in the business for decades. There are already swarms of situations where photovoltaics are a good idea to turn sunshine into electricity.
