Thoughtful post, Amy.
I recall 15 years ago, when any Silicon Valley manager worth his salt had to be away on frequent business trips to Japan. Same story now except for their travelling in "Asia" means they are on business trips to China (PRC), part of their status as manager so to say.

One of my business friends from SJC was sadly found murdered in some kind of Shanghai (or was it Peking?) nude/night club approx. 10 years ago (the founder of Scenix, now Ubicom, Inc., Steve Leung). He was found lying dead from several knife cuts over the table right in the noble part of the city, when the club closed. Nobody noticed until then.

The thing was that this guy never touched alcohol and was too "boring" to attend such clubs but preferred tending to his family including wife and a couple of small kids.

The Chinese police closed the case swiftly and claimed he had been drunk and partying too much with the wrong people.
Of course him being an ethnic albeit US Chinese made it easier for the authorities to declare the case "solved".

At least the case made it to the media in the Bay Area.

Doesn't sound like freedom, when you can't go shopping for clothes for 3 solid years. This is according to some of my Iraqi female friends.

Gag me with a spoon, but that must simply kill those frustrated mallrats.

Iraq had female lawyers as well as a variety of ethnic religions, not a mandate to be only one ethnic religion. SH was much more open minded than some of the other regimes.

Legions of Iraqi female lawyers have been put out of business for lack of opportunity to find and replace necessary and proper business attire. SH had a keen sense of style and his sons' fashion leadership is sorely missed. Although devout Sunni Muslims, they expressed a liberal appreciation of Iraq's many indigenous ethnic religions (especially Kurdish ones).

Btw, regarding China... the impression of wealth given to a foreigner is planned by the govt to a certain degree. For example, you probably didn't go to the older section of the city, because the govt has a very heavy hand on how things are planned and structured - foreigners will land at the airport and go right to the business section, which of course is in the new part. But so much is new, you're right. It looks and is very impressive. However, is it ethical to hide the poor, so to speak?

I read this quickly and thought you meant Chicago!
