Note: forwarded message attached. This was one of the
letters I was able to write from the zone, since the
17th Algiers has recieved Funding to become a Model
Project for other communitys in the area and recieve
seed money to begin to rebuild .This is a war against
poverty issue,I am home now feeling a part of me has
not returned.I made bonds with the people I worked
with and most importantly the people whom we
helped. The gratitude for simple things reaches into
ones soul and flows forward like lava I am currently
working on reorganizing to go back and continue
working with several communitys that has spoken to me
as a direction I must go.The Houmas Tribe in the
Raceland area needs rebuilding and continuous
support,Algeirs population will be an estimated 70,000
when they are able to return in full, the displaced
hispanic community in which I got invovled with before
I had to evacuate From Rita.If any one has suggestions
as to where we can find a place to set up 400 people
whose apartment building became rubble and they are
living in this rubble with no place to go.why has'nt
the Catholic church around the corner set up a shelter
for these folks? The church is empty and no one was
around.I wrote down the the phone number in hopes of
reaching someone but continuous no answer. The white
landlord is making them evacuate No place to go.The
hotel filled with with hispanic workers getting paid
minimum wage to clean up the toxic mess in New
Orleans,no protective gear,they are 6 to a motel room
tensions were running high, one of the rooms was being
cleaned but the stench was so unbelieveable i asked if
someone had died and the hotel maintence worker said
that when Katrina hit the occupants of the room looted
the store across the street and took as much meat and
ice and packed it into the bathtub and then left the
meat rotted into a grey maggot filled mass of bacteria
and they were just cleaning it to put people in the
room that day,The smell was unbelievable how can they
put humans in there?I was appalled.I am going back in
December as I need to regroup and come up with a plan
to approach a new level of in volvement.Solidarity not
Charity indeed.Love from Polly
