Now you may be surprised but personally I always believed Saddam was set up.
Just like you suggest.
I told my US Arab friends (from Kuwait) exactly that and of course they agree.
As for the reasons, I don't know because having Norman holding the horses before Bagdad seems to be out of tune with that assumption.
