That second one is a textbook chapter
which I cannot find. However, the KCN
website at Scripps has a bunch of PDF's,
so I will look at a review of total
synthesis--with select examples from history!
(including penicillin, rapamycin and
taxol...)

scripps.edu

skipping through all the chemical diagrams, you come
to a little bit about Drug Discovery and Development
and Future Perspectives--"exotic natural productlike
structures for the purpose of biological screening"

(reading Piggott and Peter Karuso
reverse chemical proteomics)

good grief, I remember "phage display"...

nobelprize.org
heh, "combinatorial biology"

It seems inevitable that this process will at least occasionally outperform rational, knowledge-based design

(I still cannot differentiate Anadys from a Kosan from
a Diversa or any of the other hundreds of biotechs--but
I'm having some fun here...so endulge me). Remember,
I've looked at in recent years is shareholder's equity,
and mostly just the cash... It is probably a good idea
from time to time to delve into what these outfits
actually do)
