The links reference that the poor are working harder and not making progress. They have less opportunity to succeed. That seems relevant to the discussion, though if all you want to do is point out that he made a hyperbolic comment that he can never back up, you're correct. If you want to have a discusion of the haves and have nots, which is what he was getting at then it is relevant.

A really good question is what do you do about it? On the extreme of either side you have untenable positions. Pulling themselves up by the boot straps or buying them new boot straps every time they need one. How do we create a hand up not a hand out society that is effective.

I have about an acre of grass that I have been mowing for 3 years. The soil quality varied wildly from excellent to rocky. Every time I mow I catch all the clippings in a bag and distribute extra on the rocky soil. Now after three years I no longer have to do this as all of it is growing equally strong.

Can this be applied to people?
