The FDA shut down a company that was making headway with farmers using natural predatory bugs to control crop eating pests because they were getting close to hurting the chemical companies that make pesticides.

The shutdown might be a good idea or a bad idea, it might be from lobbying by the companies competitors, it might be for some other reason. You don't include enough information for anyone to come to a solid conclusion.

It is true that government regulatory agencies get heavily influenced by the companies they regulated (esp. the larger ones). Some degree of influence is probably a good thing (after all the agencies make decisions that cost the companies millions or even billions of dollars, they should get a say; but the influence often becomes too extensive. This is really just a part of the larger problem with special interests (which include but are not by any means limited to large corporations).

My main problem with the FDA is its overrestrictivness. While I see the use of a serious drug approval process, I don't think that you should have to have the governments approval to undergo specific types of medical treatment.
