Our kitchen had this rubber linoleum on the floor and it had reached the point of being gummy, so pulled it and found pine floor beneath with sub flooring. I had the floors sanded and then varathaned it also. It came out beautiful and everyone that comes in for the first time admires them. I stained them a coffee color and the lighter areas in the pine glisten and the patterns of the wood are just so pretty. They are so easy to keep and just a damp mop keeps them shining. Before we could settle my husband's family estate...no one wanted to buy the family home and didn't want it sold either, so my husband and I bought it for the appraisal price and I made improvements to it and now my grandson and his wife have lived there for about five years. They are expecting their second child next January and have bought a new home so will be moving. My youngest daughter and her soon to be husband want to buy it and we will let them. My MIL gave her the dining suite out of the house and she wants to restore it as it looked when "Mom" lived there. It had a pretty sideboard in the set. It had sat vacant for quite awhile and needed some tender loving care. I added air/heat and put new kitchen bases with counter tops on with new cabinets and added a dishwasher, trash compactor and hot water dispenser and double kitchen sinks in the kitchen. My MIL had left her Chambers gas range and I had that redone. But when they delivered the stove, I had not put the burglar alarm in and the house was broken into and the stove stolen along with all the hardware we had bought to replace the old. My contractor's wife knew of an older man going to live in a retirement home and wanted to sell his gas stove, so we bought it and had it redone to put back in the house. Also modernized the bath and added a shower and extra cabinets for linens and such. Had the outside painted and added wrought iron fencing along the front and side by street with an electric wrought iron gate and wooden fence around the other side and back. They have a yellow Lab and it is just perfect for him and he is a real protector. They have taken very good care of it and had it painted again and they did a good job and it sets out among the other houses in the neighborhood. My grandson built a wooden patio out in the back yard so they could entertain their friends and he also built a very nice bridge to go over the ditch out front. Very decorative. Put two big steel posts on each side to prevent anyone from hitting it and tearing it up...it did happen, but the posts won and the guy who hit it was drinking and he really messed up his van, probably more than the whole d**ned bridge cost, but never suggested us paying for his damages as my grandson called the police and they came. His car was not drivable and he was charged with DWI and taken to jail. A wrecker came and the police impounded his van. He only damaged one rung on the bridge and my grandson replaced it and was happy with the outcome. The steel post was knocked down and it had to be re-cemented in the ground, but it didn't appear to have any bad damage to it. My contractor had suggested the steel posts to him and told him how to install them. They have painted the inside once and colors are very acceptable to us. Bath and kitchen are navy blue and white and the others room are taupe. Granddaughter in Law has used lilac colors with the navy blue and it looks pretty. My grandson varathaned the floor where I had just had them stained then with a stain that does not show scratches. It sits on three lots and we know if we sold it to someone else they would have put three townhomes on the property and would have torn the old house down. My husband is sentimental about it and glad our daughter wants to live there to keep it in the family. We know our daughter wants a jacuzzi tub for all her aches and pains (lol) and her new-to-be husband is a master plumber so he will install it for her. She doesn't want to change anything else, she said, so she thinks it will be in movein condition when the kids move and after the bath tub is changed out. Their combined children are all grown and away from home. My oldest grandson is her son and the one who has lived there. She believes this will all end happy and with everyone's approval. And so life will go on in the Sunset Heights of Houston.
