White House Staff Urged to Conserve Energy

By Associated Press

BEAUMONT, Texas -- In a move to cut energy use, White House staffers are being reminded to adjust thermostats and shut down computers, faxes and printers at the end of the day. Public transportation and car pools are a good idea, too, they're being told.

Presidential spokesman Scott McClellan said Tuesday that notices were being sent to staff with energy-saving tips. He said the steps would build on actions taken in the summer of 2001 to conserve energy.

President Bush on Monday urged Americans to drive less, to conserve gasoline, and he issued a directive for federal employees to cut their agency fuel use.

The steps include not letting cars waste gas by idling, McClellan said on Air Force One as Bush flew to Texas to inspect hurricane damage.

Bush also directed that his motorcade be scaled back, his spokesman said.
