I don't know if there was a brand name back then

I wasn't really concerned about a brand name. That's not what I meant by "what type?". There are a number of different methods by which you can cool down a house or other space. Your is just a standard (if old style) electrically driven system with freon and compressors?? Other types include heat pumps, geo-heatpumps (very efficient but very expensive in terms of initial outlay). There is also considerations like "Central air" vs. units that cool a room or area but not the whole house.

I could see if the installation would be really expensive how it might not be worth it. But $30 or $40k seems crazy. If it would be that expensive to remove the old unit, it would be cheaper to just turn it off and leave it in place while running a more modern set up. Having to install new ductwork would add to the cost, but you must have an enormous house if that adds enough to be a significant part of $30k.

That is much cheaper to run than the new ones being installed.

That's what I don't get. I'm not challenging that its true, you know your costs and even your neighbors costs, far better then I do. I just don't see how it is possible. The only think I can think of is if somehow the enormous size of your compressor gives you more efficiency.

The highest bill we have had in the twenty-six years we have lived here is $750.00

I've never paid even half of that for my eclectic bill (which includes more then just the heating and cooling, the house is 100% electric), but then I probably have a smaller (maybe much smaller) place, and its probably cooler here (VA).

4300 sq. ft., which ours is

OK, "much smaller" confirmed.
