David,
I never looked at Statoil ASA (STO) or Norsk Hydro ASA (NHY) as possible investments until you mentioned them. As a an LNG play I would guess STO would be better with its upstream Snoehvit offshore natural gas project in the Barents Sea with LNG liquafaction facility and its involvement in the North American
LNG market. They are already shipping LNG to Maryland from other sources and took 100% of the upcoming Cove Point expansion. So they're already involved in LNG shipping and trading and will soon be be involved in the more lucrative upstream side with Snoehvit.

Norsk Hydro appears to be a North Sea oriented E & P company that's attempting to become more globally diversified
in it producing properties as the North Sea fields decline.
They have sold some of their Snøhvit field gas as LNG to El Paso Global LNG Company and Spanish Iberdrola S.A under long term agreements. Norsk Hydro has signed an agreement with the Angolan state oil company Sonangol to participate in the Angola LNG Project. I don't know the status of that project.

I don't know which would be the better investment. I haven't spent any time analysing them and only did a quick superficial scan.
