Micron posts unexpected profit as sales rise
Thu Sep 29, 2005 05:03 PM ET
SAN FRANCISCO, Sept 29 (Reuters) - Micron Technology Inc. (MU.N: Quote, Profile, Research) on Thursday reported an unexpected quarterly profit, as sales of higher-margin products such as image sensors and flash memory boosted sales at the computer memory chip maker.
Earnings in the fiscal fourth quarter ended Sept. 1 were $43.1 million, or 7 cents a share, compared with a year-earlier profit of $93.5 million, or 14 cents a share. Net sales rose to $1.26 billion from $1.19 billion a year ago.

Analysts on average had been expecting the memory chip maker to report a net loss.

Chief Executive Steve Appleton has tried to steer the Boise, Idaho-based company away from its reliance on sales of computer memory chips, known as dynamic random access memory, which can swing rapidly in price from month to month.

Rising sales of higher-margin products, including flash memory chips used in consumer electronics and image sensors used in cameras and cellular phones, have helped convince investors that Micron can weather the current weakness in DRAM prices.

Robb, JCOM is in the folio and about to report. I think we should let it run.
