Yes, invented in NZ. That would be about 1990, so not many years to run on patents [haven't checked].

I was a supplier of lubricants to the factory at the time and the company and the machine were extremely impressive. A work of art, highly creative engineering in several respects.

Few moving parts in the machine.

The motor has a structure of light plastic [I forget the name of it but it's a special type]. Which would be good in a wheel to reduce weight and gyroscopic effects and angular momentum/rotational energy.

With electronic controls, wheel rotation rate and force could be individually tailored to steer, to brake, and to maintain adhesion.
