Humans have existed for approx. .04% of the age of the earth. We are a very late life form. Yet we lord it over other creatures! Of course, we can kill most of the bigger ones with the right tools. But infinitely more smaller creatures feed on us than the creatures that we feed on!

And they just go on eating us while we go on pretending we are important!

For most of history the world has been peopleless. It will UNDOUBTEDLY be so again. Nobody can debate with any dignity any of these two obvious facts.

So why cannot people unite together in a cooperative effort to keep their species alive--rather than their particular cultural and personal myths of superiority?

People cannot unite simply because we are a competitive species. It is in our nature to compete simply because that is how we feed ourselves. As for your take on religion, people have always wanted to believe in something more, something bigger, something beyond the few years people used to live. Some reason to keep struggling, and keep trying when life seemed so fragile. G*ds gave them that. And a utopia after the wretched life here ended. This set of beliefs comforts them when a child or parent or friend dies, and gives them that important sense that things will be all right, and maybe "meant to be".... Deaths are because of G*d"s will instead of simply the food was not plentiful or the water unclean. Who are you to deny them such a powerful crutch or to question the emotional needs of others? Perhaps you have no need in your life, but religion gives people an easy way to teach morals, and many other things, while except for the way they rigged their taxes, and the problems with children, most religions do very little harm.... unlike other clubs like the KKK or other racists groups.....
