Right click the link and choose "open in new tab". Mine opens a new tab but I stay on the original page. If your's operates differently, you have checked something in preferences that is causing the new tab to have the focus.

Tim,

Click on Tools > Options. Select the Advanced button on the left side column. Scroll down to Tabbed Browsing, uncheck the line that says "Select new tabs opened from links"

BTW, middle clicking is a fast and convenient way to open a link or bookmark in a new tab in Firefox.
