Under Bush, -and possibly under prior presidents- but Bush has been accelerating the trend-- the FICA tax has grown to be a larger part of the total tax revenues of the USG because of the income tax cuts for the rich, and the cuts on dividends and capital gains. There are continual studies that show more wealth concentrated in fewer hands in the US , we are starting to look like a third world country with such limited wealth concentration , and, eventually, this will lead to drops in consumer demand and production drops----ie a serious recession.

You are singing to the choir. I was taking your POV. It was Peter Dierks who was arguing that the rich pay too much.

What I don't understand is their 24/7 defense of the rich. Do they honestly think they will be multi-millionaires in a few years?

When you start to look at the myths about the US.....such as that it's a country where a very poor guy can one day be president, or that someone poor has a good shot of becoming rich if they work hard, or that an immigrant's son can be president one day. Well those myths are true if the poor guy manages to become very rich and is white and protestant before running for president, or if the someone who is poor and then gets rich receives a sizable inheritance to help him on his way or the immigrant's son turns out to be white, protestant and rich........yeah, he has a good shot at being president.

These myths have been perpetrated for years and I convinced that its a snow job to keep the middle class happy. In fact, unless you are white and protestant and male, its virtually impossible to be president. Unless you inherit serious wealth, its virtually impossible to be rich in one generation in this country no matter how hard you work. The ones who do manage to pull it off.....the same ones who are touted 24/7 as the proof that the myth is not a myth........are ones typically who lie, steal and cheat to get to the top.

Bottom line: its like you say.......more and more of this nation's wealth is becoming increasingly concentrated in the hands of the very rich. Its a situation that is of great concern, and like you said, one that will determine this country's economic well being in the future.
