Re: technological progress only happens when its products can in some way be used for the diminution of human liberty. In all the useful arts the world is either standing still or going backwards.

If you really believe this then you are no different from the Evangelists who are awaiting the Apocalypse and Armageddon and the end of the world.


Remember: that was a quote from George Orwell's 1984... I don't think Orwell was an Evangelist. Of course, I don't claim that no scientific or technological progress occurred over the past decades --hence I don't believe in Orwell's foreboding literally. Yet I believe Orwell's feeling is right in the Marxist sense of "alienation". Indeed, what first looks like a "scientific/technological boon" may turn out to be a curse in the hands of governments, corporations, bureaucracies, etc. Think of genetics, RFID tracking, video surveillance, the internet, smart cards,....
