In the spirit of the season of giving here's something I can share with the board. Earlier in the year when i-tunes was having their promotion I ended up with about 70 free songs of my choosing from their website. Trying to be careful in what I picked, I took songs old and new, rock, country, blues, gospel, and styles hard to classify.

Since other people helped me acquire the songs I wanted to pay them back someway. The easiest way seemed to be burn them some cds. For each person I would try to think of what they would like and put mainly songs like that for them along with songs I thought they might enjoy. Mix in something good they probably have never heard. Of course a lot of Dylan made its way in a most of the cds.

The results were varied. So far I have given away just over twenty cds in the last few months. Everyone were all smiles to be given something personal and made just for them. Everyone also seemed to find a new song to focus on and enjoy.

For one friend I put A Hard Rain's A Gonna Fall. He had heard a lot of Dylan but I don't think he had heard that one. He told me later on a drive he played it for his brother that was having trouble with his son. The brother was so moved he ended up crying.

One woman I worked with fell in love with the Sarah McLachlan song "I Love You." She also like Girl from the North Country. It was a new one for her.

One older woman wanted to know who that Joan Bay'ess was? lol. But she did like Love is Just a Four Letter Word.

On the ones I made for country music lovers I would put Dylan's Don't Think Twice It's Alright. Seems like Jerry Reed had a hit with that years ago. It seemed to fit.

One of the more popular songs was Leonard Cohen's Hallelujah. This was a song no one I know had heard. I made a point to emphasize the song to one lady thinking it would do no good.
She later told me she had a part time job where she gave a guy a ride on weekends and played the song for him. That began to be all he wanted to hear. He said he loved that song. She said thats fine but you don't have to play it four damn times in a row. I burned him a copy.

I did a lot of research on the song and found it had been covered over forty times. Someone is suppose to be sending me a bootleg of Dylan singing Hallelujah in concert. Can't wait.
I think Jeff Buckley has the final say on that song. Too bad he drown in 1997. He had some real talent. Also someone named Arooj Aftab has an amazing cover out too. The first twenty times I listened to it I thought it was the best song I had ever heard. I had to stop listening so I wouldn't be too familiar with it. Hate it when that happens.

Anyway there are other stories but you get the picture. People love music. And they love to receive little gifts like this. Sometimes you can open up all new worlds to some that are stuck in a rut musically. And if they can find that one special song it can mean the world to them.
