Actually as I see it, committing perjury to conceal your theft of the neighbor's apples is by far a worse crime than being found guilty of perjury to protect your brother being a murderer. To carry this further, needlessly agreeing to testify and subjecting yourself to cross-examination expecting that you can brazenly lie is a worse crime than simply lying to conceal your crime. He didn't bank on the existence of Monica's souvenir.
