rose~

we love the desert too. the first time i was in arizona
i looked around and thought, how can people stand living
here year round... cactus as far as the eye can see?

then, after a couple of days of sitting quietly watching
creatures moving about among the cacti, and especially
the birds that live in holes in the saguaro and those
that drink from their flowers.... and then the lizards
that would be running over the stones or along walls...
and quail and hare running around the barrel cactus..
and roadrunners.. and mockingbirds, like helicopters,
dropping down out of the trees to steal fruit off of
a tray of sliced oranges and whole strawberries.

i soon realized that the desert is always alive..
and in some ways, life is even more visible than it
is in places with lots of vegetation.

then, i was in the desert around Superior after a bit
of a freak snowstorm one February. Saguaro and cholla
just covered with inches of fresh snow. What a strange sight!
But it melted, and then there was some rain,
and all of a sudden, the whole desert was in bloom at once...
Pretty awesome.

I have many good memories of hikes in different places
and I'll enjoy going back again....whenever that may be.
