The future of the GOP:

"Taft's Popularity Hits Mathematical Lows

A new Columbus Dispatch poll finds Ohio Gov. Bob Taft's (R) approval rating at 15% with 85% disapproving.

Said Gallup poll director Frank Newport: "Almost any figure who’s elected in a partisan election usually has at least some support from his party. Usually there’s a party base. It’s hard mathematically to get that low."

Reed Gambles Lobbying Record Won't Hurt Him

Georgia Lt. Governor candidate Ralph Reed (R), "who once led the Christian Coalition and has condemned gambling as a 'cancer on the American body politic,' quietly worked five years ago to kill a proposed ban on Internet wagering on behalf of a company in the online gambling industry," the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports.

"Anti-gambling activists say they never knew that Reed, whom they once considered an ally, helped sink the proposal in the House of Representatives. Now some of them, who criticized other work Reed performed on behalf of Indian tribes that own casinos, say his efforts on eLottery's behalf undermine his image as a champion of public morality, which he cultivated as a leader of the religious conservative movement in the 1980s and '90s."

Moore's Decision Nears

The Montgomery Advertiser previews the expected Republican gubernatorial candidacies of ousted state Supreme Court Chief Justice Roy Moore (R) and Alabama Gov. Bob Riley (R) which "will set up a battle between the GOP's two cornerstones: religious conservatives and business groups."

Moore has scheduled an announcement about his gubernatorial plans later today.

"For months, Moore has been saying that he was praying about whether to run for governor, and that if he ran, he expected it to be as a Republican."

"ROVE-GATE ( ... OR "LIBBY-GATE" ... OR "CHENEY-GATE"). Was it White House political guru Karl Rove who leaked to the media that Valerie Plame was an undercover CIA agent ... or was it Vice Presidential Chief of Staff Scooter Libby ... or does the trail of potential criminality go all the way to the top? The Washington Post reported on Sunday that the White House is bracing for possible indictments in the case. However, ABC's George Stephanopoulos reported Sunday a "source close to this [reported] that President Bush and Vice President Cheney were actually involved in some of these discussions" planning the leak of damaging info on the wife of Ambassador Joe Wilson, an Administration critic. The New York Times reported evidence now appears to indicate that Vice President Cheney may have directed Libby to leak the info about Plame's undercover role. Plame had no known association with the CIA prior to the 2003 leaks. Because of the complexities of proving the leaking charge, the federal prosecutor is believed to be focusing instead on criminal conspiracy charges."
