It is indeed a strange thing for Bush to pull this nominee out of the bag from nowhere. I ithink he is now aiming to move towards the center and paving the way for his brother to run in 2008. More strange is that the right is now pissed off at Bush but Bush has managed to gain the support of some people on whose face he was throwing mud just 6 months ago.

Miers: Avoiding a Fight Bush Didn't Want

“Social conservatives in the Senate are not likely to make common cause with liberals in opposing Miers, at least not in sufficient numbers to endanger her confirmation. Several key Democrats made friendly noises the day she was announced, while loyalty to Bush will bring most of the GOP to heel as well. White House calculations are that Miers will have the votes, even if she has to endure some discomfiting days in the hearings. ”

The right extremists (Evangelicals) are idiots to have supported Bush all along. They are all up in arms against Bush's nomination of a sub standard nominee in Miers. Where have all these right extremists been all along. We have been telling them so about Bush all along.
