Well, since you couldn't resist opening your mouth...

The reason it wasn't "plain" for 150 years is because the Bill of Rights didn't apply to the States for 100 years, and it took another near 100 for most of the Bill of Rights to get applied through the 14th Amendment and for the courts to create the doctrines to apply them.

In your mythical perfect past before the First Amendment applied to the States, the States had laws that criminalized speaking disparagingly about public officials. Public schools could require students to memorize and recite Bible verse, like our very own American maddrassas. Now you might think that is keen and neat. I don't.
