In CA, some people moved into the house next door to mine, which had been vacant. The son borrowed my lawn equipment to mow their lawn - then he started "borrowing" it to mow other lawns, for money! (I found out later) The daughter started trying to seduce me, and the parents attempted to borrow money. One day the police came by and evicted them. Talking to the cops, it turned out that they were a family of actual Gypsies squatting in the vacant house. I never got the lawn equipment back, but I was glad I hadn't taken up with the daughter or loaned them money!

Don't get me started on tenant stories....I'm a strong person but I have been reduced to tears at how some tenants have left my houses, turning what was a beautiful little house in a good neighborhood into a blighted slum in just one year. What kills me is to have them complain to me, demanding that I replace or fix the stuff they destroy. They don't make the connection between how they act and the degradation of their surroundings.

A trick that a friend taught me was to never rent to anyone until you see what their current living situation looks like. You make any excuse to come by, like, "I'll drop the lease by your apartment." You can guarantee that if they live like pigs in their current place they will turn your place into a dump as well. I find calling their previous landlord doesn't work because a landlord who wants to get rid of a tenant will never tell you the truth.
