How about using Yahoo as comparison. They also had so many balls in the air and are certainly a well managed company now, but it wasn't until they stop trying to be everything to everyone that they became a success.

Hey, I don't dislike google I think google earth is one of the best web sites ever on the net. But there have been many companies that seemed like there was no end in sight, skies the limit. Polaroid and Xerox are two that quickly come to mind. But again they produced something. So I see google setting down into a company similar to Yahoo. They aren't exactly Bell Labs, which at least had an outlet for their brilliance.
