My father encouraged me to join Mensa (an inferiority complex, on his part). I've never met a bigger group of people who were not living up to putative potential- and were in to bitching about their lack of accomplishment. I went to several groups, because I couldn't believe they would all be awful. After a few years of going to meetings off and on in different areas I gave up.

When we moved to N. Calif our neighbor turned out to be a Mensa member and she had parties. She invited us. It was eerily similar to my other experiences. Intelligent people who can DO, do, and if they can't do, they join Mensa.
