The basic plot is that everyone is obsessed with genetic perfection, but for some silly reason Ethan's parents decided not to genetically modify his embryo. As a result he was born with too many defects. In theory, equal opportunity laws made it illegal for companies to discriminate based on your genes, but in practice he could not get a job unless he submitted to genetic testing as well as his interview...anyway, the story shows both sides of this debate by fallowing up on the life of this "imperfect" person as well as a "perfect" person who had failed in life.
