Perhaps, I'm not sure. I just bring up the mid-19th century because by then, the Confederacy was one of the last western societies to keep slaves around.

Either way, 1814 is later than 1776. A few things happened over that time span ... like a revolution in France, the continued decline of royal influence, etc.

Actually, slavery on British soil ended around 1770. They abolished the slave trade in 1815.
