Heck, we can't put together fair elections and we haven't been a war zone for a century and a half. The Shiites and Kurds in government want to go the loose federal route while the Sunnis want to go the other way...keeping things more closely intact.

The Kurds appear to be trying to figure out the Kirkuk thing, i.e. how they can make sure they get it and the oil fields while pretending to be part of Iraq. The Shiites are trying to figure out how they get the southern half of the country and get revenge for generations of oppression to boot.

In the middle, civilians just want electricity, water and the ability to go out without fear of being killed or kidnapped. I don't really get what al-Sadr's beef is or just how many really serious Baathists are left.

It's a confusing mess and who knows how it will turn out next week much less a decade down the line. At any rate no one seems to be discussing the fact that the US has RUN OUT OF MONEY for reconstruction.

It's all up to those Iraqi oil wells now as long as the likes of Chalabi don't up and steal the wealth.
