Bushies are pimps of big HMO's and Pharmas. As a result health care costs have sky-rocketed in the past five years and we are all worse off. I remember right after Bush was "elected" in 2000 the GOP held huge fundraising balls with big drug companies and HMO's paying for everything. Ever since then the fix has been in. And Bush's Medicare plan gave away 12 billion of our money in direct corporate welfare to HMO's, including the one the Frist family controlled.

Pure corruption. Only the Bushie energy scams are worse.

Peter, There is much to recommend health care in this country, but the cynic in me says that the writer of this article has either an exceptionally lenient HMO or that he has the resources to personally pay for his health care.

As for research and development in the United States, I would have to research that one. Off the top of my head, however, I would say such is way down from its former glory days.

I would also say that in the last 15-some-odd years, I have seen myriad drugs and medical devices brought to market, only to be removed within a few months to years. In recent times, this oddity has been deemed barely newsworthy, whereas time was, such was regarded as big news. Sure, the Vioxxs and fen-phens make the news, but most do not. - Holly

<edit> I just read AS's post and feel compelled to say that the problems with HMOs and big pharma long preceded the Bush Administrations--both of them. - Holly
