Key said Miers has remained a staunch member of the church throughout her five years in Washington and attended a service at the hotel several weeks ago. During a recent return trip to Dallas to visit her mother, she cradled a cell phone in the church parking lot, later explaining that she'd been on the phone with John G. Roberts Jr., now the U.S. Supreme Court's chief justice.

Ok Pat, so your wishes came true with regards to Meirs. But I see a storm brewing here that could very quickly become a Cat 5. I would think that the last thing Bush needs now is to increase his troubles. His advisors, I bet, are telling him to go for a fight so as to deflect the attention from Libby. But it could also fan the flames started by Libby. We will have to wait and see.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President George W. Bush on Saturday was narrowing his choices of Supreme Court nominees to replace Harriet Miers as Republicans said the short list consisted of highly credentialed, solidly conservative judges.

Among the candidates most talked about were appeals court judges Michael Luttig and Samuel Alito. Bush, who is spending the weekend at his Camp David retreat, was expected to unveil his choice within days.
