Yes, a smart approach would... not exactly 'encourage' the internecine civil war in Islam between Sunni and Shi'a partisans (after all, we can't be 'pro-war', 'pro death and distruction' officially as a nation), but more like simply letting the natural course of events proceed under it's own impetus, stop standing in the middle between both sides and, in effect, inviting pot shots from both camps of extremists.

The natural historical flow of events, as Islam turns on itself, in an attempt to rationalize, to --- in effect --- follow the course set in the West that preceded the Reformation... will offer great strategic benefits to the West.

By comparison, our lives lived with pluralism and religious tolerance will seem far more appealing then the puny and constricted choices offered by either camp of Islamic fundamentalist extremists.

Naturally, we as a nation would stand for freedom, pluralism, tolerance, and offer assistance to any nation that chooses a similar path.
