He was a good skier, but had taken up snowboarding. Old geezer in his 50s. Now in his 60s I suppose. It was a few years ago and I don't know him.

<I spent a month last year on the south island and explored a good chunk of it. It is a very pretty country and some day I'd like to buy land there. What are the rules about owning some wilderness in kiwiland?>

New Zealanders are really dopey. They get grumpy about foreigners buying land but are keen to invite in swarms of people "to boost the economy" as though numbers brings wealth. Check out Bangladesh for how numbers don't necessarily mean wealth and Switzerland for how wealthy countries can be with few people.

The country is being given away to bludgers moving in from around the world, including lots of Moslems who will of course try to enforce Sharia law when they get a chance, and no doubt includes a proportion of violent jihadists.

There should be tradable citizenships and then dopey politicians wouldn't dare devalue the value of the citizenship by doing dopey things or they'd be out by lunchtime. People would be less likely to vote for dopey ideas if they saw their "share price" drop on the news.

In tradable citizenship, you would be able to buy a citizenship on the open market or a new one issued by the government [say 20,000 per year], buy anything on sale and move in. If in a few years you decided the place was not all that good, you could sell your land and leave and sell your citizenship too, for a profit if the country was doing well and for a loss if it was doing badly.

But for now, you can buy land. Because of xenophobia, people and politicians are wanting to introduce restrictions on who can buy land.

govt.nz has the links somewhere I suppose.

You could contact these people arrowtownnz.com and ask what the rules are and see the properties they have at this site. < Newman Real Estate MREINZ

They have put the country code in, so they obviously expect to get calls from overseas.
