Everyone I have bought hay from lately has a job in town. A couple grow hay for themselves, and they make some money to pay for the cost of their own hay.

Farming is not a successful career path for most in this part of the country. A few really clean up. The secret seems to find a niche. When there is no competition, margins are higher. The one hay provider that does not have a city job irrigates, gets a good price for his hay, and always has a bumper crop.
