You may be opposed to letting things lapse, but your government did it. It's too bad, but there you are.

AS for this great stalinist state of Iraq, it was pathetic. People may have been arrested for telling jokes, but real criminals hide- and hide well. That's why people are arrested in this country (the US) for pranks, while real terrorists go undetected. I think our "open" society is a lot more stalinist than you think it is, and Saddam's regime, while cruel and violent, wasn't very efficient. What came to light after we invaded was that records were shoddy, lying to Saddam was common (overstating production, overstating military readiness, etc). Mr. Clarke may think Saddam gave sanctuary to Yasin, but many things have been said about Saddam, and his regime, that were blatantly untrue. From the evidence it's pretty clear that Saddam's hold on the country was one of brute force, but hardly a sophisticated and clever hold- not the hold of an allseeing omnipotent ruler able to spy on all his subjects. He had a hammer, and everyone he caught looked like a nail, and I'm not all that sure he caught that many of the right people.

Your faith in the stalinist power of the Iraqi state is touching, but I think it is fantasy. I ask you for proof of Saddam's gifts of sanctuary, and you give me the testimony of Mr. Clarke- a man I don't believe on any subject. Are there pictures of SAddam and Yasin together? Did they have barbeques? Did they hug and kiss- like our leaders and Saddam? The press has been amazingly wrong on Iraq- look at the foul up they made of the whole WMD thing- and you expect me to believe unsubstantiated press reports? hard evidence- what do you have? Anything? I'm open to your idea that Saddam gave sanctuary to at least this one guy- but what is your proof?
