I thought that the 20th century was fairly peaceful. The total number of deaths due to warfare and various mass deaths and atrocities during the century was about 216 million, world wide. The number of people who died during that period was about 4000 million, so only about 1 person in 20 was killed in "colossal scale" violence.

The last 25 years of the last century were quite peaceful with a population of about 6000 million, but only around 10 million killed in mass carnage, or about 1 in 600, just looking at the numbers in the link below.

The number of people killed by smallpox during the 20th century was about 500 million.
